New Bodies with Reformer Pilates

Updated: Mar 17, 2020

Aside from being so much different than anything we can offer on the weight floor, Pilates on the reformer is FUN. But, what is Pilates?

Most newbies will walk into the studio and mention the 'medieval torture machines' or something from '50 shades'. All jokes aside, the reformer is a spring based resistance machine that allows us to move our bodies with low impact and tap into our inner most layer of muscles. Yes, it can be intimidating! Your first class will be a lot of new exercises, with an emphasis on your own body awareness. You will learn everyone's favorite part of pilates, The Hundreds (as every Pilates instructor reading this giggles).

When we say Pilates is for EVERY BODY, it is very true. All fitness backgrounds and all beginners alike, you will improve your posture, focus on body alignment, gain core strength; all adding years to your life!

Joseph Pilates stated “A man is as young as his spinal column.” This is my favorite class theme; who doesn't want to feel young? The spine, for Joseph Pilates, was the key to physical and emotional well being. Neutral spine alignment is everything. “If your spine is stiff at 30,” he once said, “you are old. If it is flexible at 60, you are young.” Pilates develops the deep muscles of the back and abdomen to support your spine, and focuses on breathing to promote better posture.

So, how much Pilates do we need? A 2016 study found that eight weeks of Pilates classes improved abdominal endurance, flexibility, and balance. Joseph Pilates elaborates on his desired client frequency as “In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 sessions you’ll see a difference, and in 30 sessions you’ll have a whole new body”. Joe’s dedicated clients would see him at least 3-4 times a week. Often, “feeling better” is what gets us hooked on Pilates! In just 10 sessions, your muscles feel stronger, your body feels more aligned, and your mind feels clear and stress-free. After 20 sessions, you may notice muscle definition and fit better into your jeans (which is always a good excuse for a new outfit!). After 30 dedicated sessions, you’ll be moving better, feeling better, and living better. Pilates will translate to the other aspects of your life, and keep you healthy and strong for years to come.

Here at Life Time Easton, we have 5 different instructors, and we all vary in teaching levels and class speed. Our schedule denotes levels and your first session with an instructor can help place you in an appropriate class. Check out Debbie, and her rock star class! This is a faster paced level 2/3 class. To give you an idea, most of these ladies have been taking class for 2 years and 2 times a week. Thanks, Debbie, for letting me record your class.
